Week 5- Happy Fourth of July

Sunday- Still feeling good after 8 miles on Saturday. Run/Walk convert for sure!!! :)

Monday- 30 minutes on the elliptical, stretching, core, and arms (yawwwwwwnnnnnn) Jeff bought EA Active for the Wii, which is supposedly much better than Wii Fit because the workouts are more intense. Eventually I'm going to try out for my Monday cross training. It totally kicked his butt though :)

Tuesday- Track workout Red White and Blue day- I dressed as Wonderwoman and won! Woohoo... The downside... Running in velvet and a skirt is hot and adds a lot of drag. :) We did our laps in waves 1 lap, 2 laps, 3 laps, 4 laps while trying to increase our pace each time (not so hard).

Wednesday- Spin class that focused on sprints- which you would think would mean less resistance, but no... these were up-hill sprints. Ouchy! And of course, the dreaded Abs/Arms class where I wanted to scream that it was impossible the whole time... I literally couldn't force with all my will power one more overhead tricep rep.

Thursday- Buddy run with Raj and Catherine at Guadalupe trail, 4 easy miles of Run/Walk.  It's funny how 4 miles feels so short these days....

Friday- Rest

Saturday- 6.5 miles on the northern part of Guadalupe trail- ran the first 4 non-stop, then an 8-1 run/walk after that followed by arms at the gym. Iced and wrapped my shins with ace-bandage to reduce swelling after the run, not too much pain the rest of the day. Started feeling a bit of pain below my right ankle and it may be time to switch shoes. Tried to eat healthy at 4th of July cookout- drank watermelon juice and ate a bunch of sliced tomatoes... which was about the end of the healthy eating... then I had delicious brownies and (gasp) sour cream and onion potato chips... mmmm guilty food.

Week 4- Honoree Week

Just realized I never hit send on here... Oops!!

Sunday- Decided to sleep in (sorry guys) and skip the "not-so on your own" run. I did a late morning 10K with Lady Gaga and Daft Punk. Felt pretty good and my time had improved without feeling like I was pushing it.

Monday- Swimming for 45 minutes is a lot more tiring than one might think. I could barely walk after.

Tuesday- Track workout with time trial. It was HOTT! I tried to focus on my cadence and keeping a steady pace (which i'm positive is why I always have hip flexor problems) and finished my 3 miles in 26.50. Honoree Todd chatted afterwards (picture below)

Wednesday- Spin class, lots of sprints on the bike and the usual abs and arms... getting better with the planks, but still have to go down to my knees for the pushups on the bosu ball.

Thursday- Traffic kept me from the buddy run :( So, I opted to give my legs a break and went for a swim instead- even Jeff joined me!!!

Friday- Rest rest rest rest rest.... ice ice ice ice

Saturday- 8 miles on the Los Alamitos trail.... the heat was pretty intense... I ran the first 4 miles non-stop, and was struggling with the usual hip and shin pain, so at the suggestion of Gabby, I joined her on a 5-1 run/walk. I must say, as someone who normally takes pride in being able to run without breaking for relatively long distances, I had scoffed a bit at the benefits of run/walk. I always feel like if I were to walk, that I'll feel every pain when I try to start up running again. By keeping both times relatively short, I didn't experience that at all. In fact, I felt pretty amazing after the run and have had much less pain in my hips and shins. Plus- I finished faster than I would have if I had ran the whole thing. I'm a convert. Now I just need to get a watch that has an interval timer.

Week 3: Injury and Recovery.

Sunday- Run at Hellyer park- first time I've ever been there and it's a beautiful run in South San Jose. Completed 7 miles at a "strong and steady" pace. Afterwards, we had delicious waffles courtesy of Coach Steve! Loved his dog "Reebok!!"

Monday- OKAY... sooooo uhhhhhh yah, I moved shifted my rest days and iced my hip flexors. Tuesday- Migraine really put me under, so I had to miss track workout. Instead, I did a short 35 minutes on the elliptical and leg weights.

Wednesday- Great spin and ab/arm class with Courtney at Vivre- if you ever want to feel like you're totally out of shape, go to one of her classes. Still unable to get through the bosu-plank set, but was able to hold for the first minute at least. :)

Thursday- Buddy run at Guadalupe trail... 4.5 miles!

Friday- Much needed rest day... ice ice ice ice ice....

Saturday- Intervals on the treadmill- 1 mile warmup starting at 6.0 and working up to 6.7mph and 2% incline. Then 1/4 mile intervals- 2 @ 8.0mph 2 @ 8.5mph and 1 @ 9.0mph then... uh oh.... pain pain pain. Both my hip flexors and my shins were burning, so I walked a bit and stopped stretch and do some light arm work.

This week, I really tried to (more than usual) make sure I was eating what I should be. I thought about keeping a food diary on here as well as my workout, but that would even more boring :) I'll say one thing, it's SUPER hard to go to Santa Cruz and just eat an apple when there are delicious funnel cakes and ice cream all around. I did make brownie-york patty cupcakes though, pretty awesome. I was testing a recipe for bake sales to come.

The Cause

In our manager's update this week, Simone had this breakdown of the costs of cancer. As I begin to ramp up my fundraising, I thought it would make sense to give a bit of perspective.

THE CAUSE
When I read how much it costs for an average night stay at Children’s Hospital, it got me thinking about the money that has been spent throughout the year:

What Does It Cost To Have One Of These Diseases? Leukemia impacts every area of a patient’s life and the lives of their families. Having leukemia means painful treatments and emotional challenges for the patient and their family. While a family is dealing with all of these issues, they are also dealing with the financial costs. The following is a list of expenses associated with diagnosis and treatment during the first week only compiled by a patient family. Average one night stay at Children’s Hospital $990 - $1,350

Surgery to put in Port-A-Cath $1,560
(A Port-A-Cath is a device inserted under the skin to make the administration of chemotherapy easier)
Initial Stay at Diagnoses, 6 nights
6 days at $990 $ 5,940.00
Special Nursing $ 120.00
Surgery Services $ 1,873.80
Lab $ 5,407.00
Radiology $ 310.00
Pharmacy $ 1,733.00
Supplies $ 2,775.85
Emergency $ 241.90
Lab Work $ 1,628.20
Cardiology $ 838.40
Professional Fees $ 385.30

Total Charges: $21,255.22 Ouch!

Week 2 (exhaustion)

Sunday was a welcomed rest day, so I went to the farmers market and really stocked up on fruits and veggies. I've been SO much hungrier this week so I want to make sure I have healthy snacks so I don't binge at night... (I also saw UP on Sunday- totally unrelated to TNT, but everyone should go see it! So good!)

Monday- 35 minutes of Elliptical + 20 minutes of weightlifting (*yawn*)

Tuesday- I was antsy all day about the track workout in the evening. I haven't had the chance to run on a track since I moved from NY in January 08. There is nothing quite like running on a track... it just makes me want to run FAST. Of course, we weren't really suppose to run sprints, but I couldn't resist. Relays were fun and a place to have a little friendly competition because they were 200m legs which is a perfect distance to push! Didn't stay for the hang with the gang- I try to limit my fast food/restaurant food to no more than once (sometimes twice) a week. Pretty sure Chipotle would have given me a tummy ache after the run, though the guacamole is delicious :)

Wednesday- So there's sore and then there's pain. I think I was somewhere between these on Wednesday, I didn't feel injured, but my muscles were so exhausted from Tuesdays track workout, that I could barely walk up and down the stairs. Best way to remedy that? A crazy hard spin class at Vivre, of course! Also did a 25 minute ab/arm class afterwards. Planks and pushups on a Bosu ball. They were so challenging that I now have decided to take "plank breaks" throughout the day, just because I want to work up to being able to get through the whole thing.

Up to the challenge? Try this core exercise!

1:00 Plank with Bosu ball holding each side like a pushup (ball side down)
10 pushups on ball (no breaking in between)
0:30 Plank (this time... try to write your name in cursive with the ball for an added challenge)
5 pushups
0:30 Plank 5 pushups

Additionally, we did some intense abs that made me realize how much you still have to have use of your legs to do "bicycles" and leg lifts... because by this point, my legs were just floppy noodles that were unwilling to cooperate and I failed miserably at every attempt to lift them.

Thursday- BUDDY RUN. I joined the Guadalupe Park group for a ~4 mile "strong and steady" run. Then promptly iced my calves and achilles and ate a super protein rich dinner. Happy to have 2 days of rest to ice and hopefully heal my muscles before Hellyer Park on Sunday! Going to keep up with my "plank breaks" though!!!

Go Team!
